She knows that this is certain death but when she uses her skills to actually be a contender, Katniss has a chance of going back home to her family.  When she watches her friends die, she knows that she has the ability to win. Throughout the story, Katniss has to deal with twists, starvation and even love that leads up to a decision that changed her life forever.
