The Help

   The Help
By Kathryn Stockett
444 pages

"Tomorrow night. I'll...come back with a better way. Let's just keep trying." Miss Skeeter said bravely.

In the novel The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, a group of women speak out about what it is like to be a black woman working for a white family in Mississippi, during the early 1960's. A "white lady" with the name of Miss Skeeter, starts out wanting to write a book and persuades her friends maid to be interviewed first. They continue on interviewing, in secret, other maids until the book is slowly but surely pieced together. Throughout these events the characters have to deal with a broken romance, the ups and downs of jobs, miscommunication of friends and the fight to get this book into print. The characters showed true bravery and courage to make this book happen even though they knew that their safety was at high risk. You'll just have to read this amazing book to see if all their hard work paid off.

Magician Nephew Question Blog Response

#4   Well, today I heard the most beautiful sound! It all started when Digory and I accidentally transported Uncle Andrew, the Cabby and the Cabby's horse with the Witch to the Wood between Worlds instead of just with her. When we were in the pool to take us home, it transported us to a pitch black place instead. We could not see one another and it would not matter whether we had our eyes open or not. When we finally figured out that it was hopeless to find our way out of this place, the Cabby started a speech on how everything was going to be all right and that someone would be done to get us shortly since he thought we were down below London. When he ended his whole talk, he proposed that we sing a hymn to lighten our spirits. He then started singing a Thanksgiving hymn and Digory and I joined, yet Uncle Andrew and the Witch did not. While we were still singing, another voice came along that we did not recognize as one of our own. When we stopped to listen,  we realized that song had no words and not even a tune. Soon, the gorgeous voice seemed to have made twinkling stars appear in the sky. After a while, it seemed as though that the stars were the ones singing! Very soon after that, the sun started to rise and we were able everyones faces. As far as expressions, the Cabby, Digory and myself all had our mouths open and joy in our eyes from the beauty of the hymn. On the other hand, Uncle Andrew and the Witch seemed to absolutely hate it and couldn't wait for it to stop. The sun was rising and we could see a lot more including what the voice was coming from. What surprised us the most was that the Lion was singing those beautiful notes that we had heard just a few moments ago. Well, I had a pretty exciting day and I can't stop thinking about the voice and the Lion that owned it. Can't wait to write abut my next adventure!

Magician Nephew Question Blog Response

#1     Queen Jadis, a.k.a the Witch, does not think very well of the place they call "Nothing." You can tell because almost as soon as they arrive, she says quote, "My doom has come upon me." Also, as soon as she hears the music/ the Voice, she seems to absolutely hate it! Plus, when the Cabby is trying to be positive and started singing a hymn, her and Uncle Andrew did not join in. So, just to put everything in perspective, the Witch would not choose "Nothing" as a vacation spot.
